Asking questions about your timetable
The optional assistant on the FET helper. It answers in words, you choose where it runs, and your .fet file never leaves your computer.
The FET helper can also answer questions in words. Go to fetviewer.com/check and look above the results.
This assistant is optional. The check itself does not use it. If nobody turns it on, the page does not load it.
First, choose where it runs
The question box is not there until you choose a model. Before that, the page shows you an example answer and the places the assistant can run.
To start with a model in your own browser, press Try a browser model now on the example card. Before you check a file, the same choice reads Use a model in this browser. Both cost nothing and need no account.
After you choose, the question box appears in the same place.
What you can ask
Type a question and press Ask. For example: which teacher has the most hours?
You can ask before you check a file. Then the assistant answers questions about FET rules only, because it has no timetable to read.
After you check a file, it can also answer questions about that timetable. It reads the same findings you see on the page.
The assistant remembers your earlier questions in the same visit. You can ask "and what about Tuesday?" and it knows what you mean.
Where the assistant runs
Press Assistant settings to choose. The button sits beside Ask once you have a model. Before that, press Other ways in the same place.
There are four places, and the list starts with the most private.
Two of them need no account: in this browser, and on a server you run. Those two are the ones you see when you are signed out. With your own key needs a free account. Included with your plan needs a paid plan.
In this browser. The model runs on your own computer. Your question and your timetable stay there. The first download is about 1 GB. You need a recent browser and a strong computer.
On a server you run. This works with Ollama or LM Studio on your own machine. There is no download from us and no cost. A larger model gives better answers. ⚠ If your server is on another computer, your question travels across your network.
With your own key. You add a key from an AI company. You pay that company for what you use. It is fast and it works on any machine. ⚠ You need a free account for this one. It does not appear when you are signed out.
Included with your plan. There is nothing to install and no key to paste. A paid plan includes a number of questions each month. The free plan includes none.
What each choice sends
Your .fet file never leaves your computer. No option sends the file.
The page tells you where your question goes, and it tells you three times.
Before you ask. If your question leaves your computer, a warning appears above the Ask button. It names the company that receives it. There is no warning for the two choices that run on your own computer, because nothing leaves.
While it works. The waiting line says where the question went.
Under the answer. The page repeats where the answer ran.
If you have not checked a file, these lines say "No timetable, no file." The assistant then sends your question and nothing else.
If you have checked a file, the assistant sends your question and a short summary of the timetable. The summary is a few hundred words. It is not the file.
⚠ If you keep your chats on your account, the line says that too.
Choosing a model
The model list sits inside the question box. Some models are greyed out. A greyed model cannot hold enough text for this file.
The bar above the results tells you the size a local model needs, for example "a local model needs at least 16K context". Set that size in Ollama or LM Studio, and the model becomes available.
⚠ Most local servers use a small size by default. This is the most common reason a local model refuses a question.
Answer length
Open Assistant settings to change the answer length. The Answer control offers Short, Normal and Long.
Longer is not always better. Every word reserved for the answer is a word the timetable table cannot use, and that table is what stops a model inventing free slots. Normal is the default for that reason.
What to attach
Press the + button in the question box to attach a timetable.
Upload a .fet file. Your browser reads it and the helper checks it at the same time.
Use a timetable from your account. This appears when you sign in. We already hold that timetable, so the check sends us nothing new.
What the assistant cannot do
The assistant reads the check. It does not solve your timetable and it never changes your file.
⛔ An AI model can be wrong. The findings above it are arithmetic and the assistant is not. Treat an answer as a suggestion, and check it against the findings. See What it cannot tell you.
